Manipur LS MP Bimol Akoijam Accuses Centre of Silently Encouraging Communal Divide in State

Inner Manipur MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam has accused the central government of silently encouraging communal division in the state.

Speaking to the media at his residence in Keishamthong, Imphal West, Bimol said that despite official denials, “buffer zones” are clearly visible on the ground and are dividing communities.

He referred to recent incidents like the clash in Leitanpokpi when farmers tried to work on their land, the shooting of a farmer in Phubala, and how he himself was stopped by security forces from entering Phougakchao Ikhai, a part of his own constituency.

“There is an unstated, communally-based division in Manipur, and it manifests in this very troublesome concept of a ‘buffer zone.’ Officially, the government said there is no such thing, but in practice, a de facto buffer zone seems to exist. This idea of ‘my land’ and ‘your land’ is being reinforced, and the security forces and the state seems to be mute spectator. This is what I came to know when I visited Phougakchou-Ikhai. Just 300 meters from where I stood is Kangvai Bazaar. That division was created during May 3rd by troops stationed there, and now it has been almost formalised. Yet, the government insists there is no buffer zone.”

“I requested to visit a place just 300 meters away already within my constituency, already secured. But when I spoke to the SP, he described it as a ‘peripheral area.’ I told him this is not the periphery, this is the buffer. What is peripheral about a location just 300 meters away? I wasn’t asking to go deep into conflict zones, just 300 meters. If that area is deemed unsafe, then what does it say about the government’s claim of having recovered weapons and sanitized the region? How do we explain incidents like farmers being shot or an MP being stopped from entering a supposedly secure area?,” said Bimol Akoijam.

“It suggests that the area is not truly secure and that arms have not been fully recovered. On the other hand, you are implicitly justifying this communal division,” the MP added.

He warned that such actions are not about safety but reflect a dangerous divide that goes against the Constitution.

On the political situation, Bimol said President’s Rule is not the solution. He hopes the BJP legislators will soon form a popular government. “If they can’t, then we should go for a fresh election,” he added.
