Sikkim Launches Major Crack Down on Illegal Online Gambling Websites After People Commit Suicides Following Huge Losses

People are losing huge money. They are selling land, committing suicides due to gambling losses

The Sikkim State Lotteries Directorate, along with the State CID Police and Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), has launched a major crack down on illegal online gambling websites. These unregistered platforms are cheating people, causing huge financial losses, and leading to distressing personal situations across the state with many even committing suicides unable to bear the financial losses.

Principal Director of Sikkim State Lotteries, Pawan Awasthy, speaking to media on Tuesday, explained the dangers of these illegal websites. “These sites are not approved by the Sikkim government. They don’t follow any laws and don’t pay any taxes. People must understand the serious risks involved”.

Awasthy further said that the main problem with illegal gambling is that the websites are not registered. Awasthy said, “These websites are not registered with the government. So they operate without rules or any control. They change the game results and do not pay the winners. Many people have been fooled during payout time. And because of these some people in Sikkim have lost huge amounts—land has been sold, and in one shocking case, someone lost more than Rs 1 crore. We have even heard of suicides linked to gambling losses.”

Awasthy, urged the public to avoid illegal sites and if they want to play then they should play only on legal sites like Golden Gaming, which are approved by the state government. He also appealed that if anyone realises that they have been scammed, it should be immediately reported at the Sikkim State Lottery office which can help in taking strong legal action against the fraudsters.

Awasthy, explained that Sikkim has a clear legal system for online gaming. Only companies that have a valid license can operate. Awasthy assured that the government is taking strict action against illegal websites and operators to protect the public.
