Bairabi–Sairang railway line in Mizoram is fully complete

The much awaited 51.38-km Bairabi–Sairang railway line in Mizoram is fully complete and awaits inauguration. Connecting Aizawl to India’s rail network via Silchar, the project—marks a major boost to North East connectivity and development.

Talking to news agency ANI, Chief Engineer, Bairabi-Sairang Project, Vinod Kumar on Sunday said, “This project was sanctioned in 2008-09 and later it was declared as a National project. Land acquisition was completed till 2014, and then PM Modi laid the foundation stone, and now it has been completed… The biggest challenge has been the season, as this region has a prolonged monsoon season and also has landslide issues. Additionally, there are issues related to the labour force, as most of them come from other states… We have also designed the project in a way that it remains unaffected even during the monsoon. This is the second-highest bridge in North East India, and the life of the project is expected to be above 100 years… PM Modi laid the foundation stone in 2014, and we are happy that it is being completed in his tenure only. It is one of the governmnet’s achievements in 11 years.”

On the other hand,Divisional Electrical Engineer Md Zahid Akhtar on Sunday said, “…We have installed LED lightning in the tunnels, which are environment-friendly. We are also using cables that will emit low smoke in the event of any mishap, and these cables will not release toxic gases. We are also utilising solar power and plan to have a plant for the same in the future…”

Chief, Singal and Telecommunication Engineer of Bairabi–Sairang railway line project, Vijay Kumar Chaudhary said, “…It is a dream project for the North East… Safety is paramount for us, and hence our Signal design has been created with that in mind… Tourism will boom once this railway line becomes operational. The project will also extend further. As of now, the project is ready, and it depends on the government of India when they want it to be inaugurated.”
The Bairabi-Sairang project includes 48 tunnels and 55 major bridges. The total length of tunnels is 12,853 metres. One notable bridge, bridge number 196, stands at 104 metres, surpassing the height of the Qutub Minar by 42 metres. The project is divided into four sections – Bairabi-Hortoki, Hortoki-Kawnpui, Kawnpui-Mualkhang, and Mualkhang-Sairang.

The Commission of Railway Safety (CRS) conducted an inspection of the 33.86-km Hortoki-Sairang stretch from June 6 to June 10. The inspection involved both motor trolley and foot surveys, followed by a speed trial with a diesel locomotive. The CRS has authorised the line for public transport with a maximum speed limit of 90 km/h.

The project costs over ₹8,200 crore as per revised estimate and the construction began in 2015
This new railway line will enhance connectivity for Mizoram’s capital, Aizawl, which is located approximately 20 km from Sairang. Before this project, Bairabi was the only railway station in the state. The opening of this line will integrate Mizoram into the national railway network, facilitating the movement of goods and passengers.

The Bairabi-Sairang project is part of a larger initiative by the Ministry of Railways to connect all state capitals in the Northeast region. This includes multiple new lines and doubling projects across states like Assam, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Manipur, and Tripura. However, railway development in Meghalaya has faced delays due to local opposition.
