The Prime Minister emphasised the increasing global demand for cruelty-free and environmentally sustainable products.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in the 123rd episode of his monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat today, praised Meghalaya’s traditional Eri Silk for its ethical and eco-conscious production process.
Highlighting its recent recognition with a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, the Prime Minister hailed Eri Silk as both a cultural heritage and a sustainable product with growing global appeal.
Describing Eri Silk as a legacy for Meghalaya, PM Modi said the state’s tribal communities, especially the Khasi people, have preserved and enriched the art of Eri Silk weaving over generations.
“The method of making this silk is unique. The silkworms are not harmed in the process, which is why it is also known as ‘Ahimsa Silk’,” said the Prime Minister.
The Prime Minister emphasised the increasing global demand for cruelty-free and environmentally sustainable products.
“Meghalaya’s GI-tagged Eri Silk is the perfect product for the global market. It keeps you warm in winter and cool in summer, making it suitable for most regions,” he added.
PM Modi also acknowledged the role of women in Meghalaya who, through Self Help Groups, are scaling up the production of Eri Silk and carrying forward this cultural treasure.
“I congratulate the people of Meghalaya on Eri Silk getting the GI tag. I urge everyone to try clothes made from Eri Silk and to continue supporting khadi, handloom, handicraft, and the ‘Vocal for Local’ campaign,” the Prime Minister appealed.
