The shocking find has turned a missing persons case into a potential killing investigation.
Nearly a year after she mysteriously went missing, skeletal remains believed to be those of 55-year-old teacher Passang Doma Sherpa from South Sikkim have been discovered in a locked house in Siliguri, West Bengal.
The shocking find has turned a missing persons case into a potential killing investigation.
The mystery began when Sherpa a teacher at Manglee Government School in Sikkim failed to report back to her school, prompting the Sikkim Education Department to inform the police in August last year.
Speaking to Northeast Live, Namchi Superintendent of Police Karma Gyamtso Bhutia said that the case took an unusual turn when police discovered that Sherpa’s husband and their daughter were also missing.
Her daughter was later traced and found safe, currently residing with her paternal grandparents. Meanwhile, there is still no trace of her husband.
The investigation is now focused on determining whether Sherpa was murdered.
Initial inquiries revealed that the trio had last been seen on August 7, 2023, leaving for Siliguri.
SP Karma Gyamtso Bhutia said, “Initially, a missing person complaint was filed at a local police station in Siliguri, but the case appeared to have gone cold until recently. Police suspect that Sherpa was alive until at least August 10, 3 days after her last sighting. During our investigation, we found that the woman had invested in a plot in Siliguri and was constructing a house there but it was in her husband’s name. Acting on leads, a special police team comprising Sherpa’s son and other officers was dispatched to Siliguri, where they broke open the locked house on June 26. Inside, they made a grisly discovery: human skeletal remains, now believed to be those of Sherpa.”
The investigation is now focused on determining whether Sherpa was murdered.
Forensic examination of the remains and a deeper probe into the family’s circumstances, especially the role of her missing husband, are underway.
