Assam to Announce Stricter Norms for Aadhaar Cards, Only DCs to be Aauthorised to Issue Cards: Assam CM

District Commissioners will be eligible to issue Aadhaar cards

Assam Cabinet will soon announce stricter norms for the issuance of Aadhaar cards in the state to deter fresh infiltrators from Bangladesh obtaining the cards.

Addressing a press conference at CMO, Chief Minister Sarma said that once the Cabinet decision is announced, only District Commissioners will be eligible to issue Aadhaar cards. As a result, fresh infiltrators from Bangladesh will not be able to obtain Aadhaar cards.

“There are few genuine people in tea gardens that have not got Aadhaar cards, the DCs will be authorised to issue the cards. Earlier people could obtain Aahdaar cards from Aadhaar Centres and SDC offices, but once the Cabinet decision is in place, the DC will personally check the credentials and approve it, and then the card will be issued,” CM said.

Chief Minister Sarma categorically stated that the idea behind the move is to ensure that no fresh Bangladeshi infiltrators will be able to enrol themselves in voter list and other government documents using Aadhaar as the verification credential.

Earlier in September 2024, Chief Minister Sarma said that Assam had more Aadhaar cardholders than the projected population in at least four districts – Barpeta, Dhubri, Morigaon, and Nagaon. The majority of these districts are Muslim, mostly of Bengali origin, often perceived as Bangladeshi.

He said that while 103.74% of Barpeta district’s projected population was found to possess Aadhaar cards, the figures for Dhubri (bordering Bangladesh), Nagaon, and Morigaon districts were 103.48%, 101.86%, and 101.76%, respectively.
