The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Meghalaya Police has intensified the investigation of the high profile Raja Raghuvanshi murder. But the case is getting complicated with the passage of time with the Head of the SIT, Herbert Pyniaid Kharkongor admitting that key pieces of evidence are still missing and two key accused – Akash Rajput and Anand Kurme refusing to confess before the Magistrate.

The investigation took a dramatic turn when Akash and Anand refused to confess or make any statement before magistrate.

Kharkongor told media,”We sent only two (Akash Rajput and Anand Kurme) of the five accused to the magistrate. They did not want to make any statement. But we have ample material evidence against them.”

Police had earlier claimed that all the accused had confessed to their involvement in the murder. However, confessions made to the police do not hold up in court unless the accused repeat the same before a magistrate under Section 183 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).

Talking to mediapersons on Thursday in Shillong, Kharkongor said that the SIT is also trying to determine the exact location where crucial items such as a laptop were thrown. Kharkongor futher said that the bag linked to the crime was found burnt. Sonam Raghuvanshi’s third phone has not yet been found. The burnt bag has been sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory, and further analysis will reveal what compounds were present in the bag, as visual inspection alone is inconclusive. According to statements given before the police by Raj Kushwaha and Anand Rajput, there was a weapon in the bag.

Police further discovered the Sonam Raghuvanshi, reportedly had three phones. Two have been confirmed destroyed, while the third remains missing.

Meanwhile, the SIT has brought 3 more accused – Silome James, Balbir Ahirbar and Lokendra Singh Tomar, from Madhya Pradesh to Shillong. They have been remanded to 6-day police custody. The 3 accused – Lokendra Singh Tomar is the owner of a flat where Sonam stayed in Indore between May 26 and June 8; Silome James, is a property dealer who rented that flat to Vishal, another accused who actually killed Raja; and Balbir Ahirbar alias ‘Ballu’, a security guard from the area.

Investigators are working to uncover details related to the destruction of evidence. The police are also preparing for the next course of action and may send a team again to Madhya Pradesh if required.
