If Assam and Gujarat Can, Why Tripura Can’t? Allies TIPRA Motha and IPFT Slams BJP-Ruled Tripura Govt For Inaction on Illegal Immigrants, Urges Centre to Step In

The TIPRA Motha initiated the protest by organising multiple rallies across the state, accusing the state government of endangering national security.

In a united show of discontent, both tribal allies of the ruling BJP in Tripura, TIPRA Motha and the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT), have sharply criticised the state government for failing to implement the Union Home Ministry’s (MHA) directive to identify and deport illegal immigrants within 30 days.

The TIPRA Motha initiated the protest by organising multiple rallies across the state, accusing the state government of endangering national security and tribal identity. TIPRA leader and state minister Animesh Debbarma, along with MLA Ranjit Debbarma, also met Governor Indra Sena Reddy Nallu and submitted a memorandum demanding the deployment of central forces, claiming the state government had “completely failed to act” on the May 19 MHA order.

Following their lead, the IPFT also raised strong objections. A five-member IPFT delegation led by General Secretary Swapan Debbarma and Minister Shukla Charan Noatia submitted a separate memorandum to the Governor. They demanded that the Centre and the Governor directly monitor and execute the deportation order.

Speaking to the media, Swapan Debbarma said, “The memorandum is addressed to Union Home Minister Amit Shah. We also plan to meet him soon. The state’s actions after the MHA’s order are completely unsatisfactory.”

He pointed out that other states like Assam and Gujarat have already taken visible measures such as establishing detention camps and forming mobile task forces. “But in Tripura, there is no such sign. No task forces have been formed, and no camps are in place,” he added.

He further noted that the demand to identify illegal migrants goes back to 1967 when Tripura’s first tribal party TUJS raised the issue. “Since Tripura’s merger with India, illegal settlements have posed a threat to tribal identity and regional security,” he said.

Swapan Debbarma insisted that the Centre must now intervene directly. “Why the state government isn’t acting is a question only they can answer, but this matter affects national sovereignty, and the Centre must act now,” he stressed.

The IPFT also demanded the immediate passage of the Constitution (125th Amendment) Bill, 2019 in the upcoming Parliament session to empower the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC).

The MHA’s notification, issued on May 19, 2025, directed all states and Union Territories to begin identifying and deporting illegal immigrants, especially from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Myanmar, including the Rohingya population.
