Greed Wins Over Love as Father Sells 15-Day-Old Baby for Rs 25,000 in Assam’s Hailakandi

In a heart-wrenching incident that has shaken the very core of humanity, a father has sold his 15-day-old newborn for a mere Rs. 25,000 in Assam’s Hailakandi.

The man identified as Zakariya Ahmed Barbhuiya sold the infant to a family in the Cachar district.

The horrifying act came to light on June 23, 2025, when the Child Helpline Unit, Hailakandi, received a distress call and immediately swung into action.

Since then, efforts to locate and rescue the child have been underway, but no trace of the infant has been found yet.

The Child Welfare Committee has registered a case and begun a full-scale investigation.

Meanwhile, the Child Helpline Unit, Hailakandi, has formally written to the Project Coordinator of the Child Helpline Unit, Cachar, requesting urgent assistance in rescuing the infant.

“We appreciate your cooperation and look forward to working closely with your team to ensure the safety of the child involved,” the Child Helpline Unit, Hailakandi said in the letter.
