This initiative is part of a larger Rs 1,900 crore investment to create world-class sports infrastructure in Meghalaya.
In a significant move ahead of the 2027 National Games, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma today handed over Rs 39.17 crore to 26 sports associations in the state. The funding aims to enhance their preparation for the upcoming Games which Meghalaya is set to host.
The financial support is intended for the procurement of quality sports equipment, improvement of training infrastructure, and strengthening of overall performance standards.
This marks a major shift from past practices, where governments would centrally manage sports logistics and procurement. Instead, the current administration has adopted a decentralized approach, empowering local sports bodies with financial autonomy.
“This approach is about trust, responsibility, and flexibility,” said the Chief Minister, explaining that empowering associations will encourage accountability while enabling them to address their specific sporting needs more effectively.
With approximately 38 sporting disciplines alive in Meghalaya, the disbursed funds are expected to benefit a broad range of sports. By enabling associations to cater to their unique requirements, the government hopes to foster athlete-specific and discipline-focused training ahead of the national event.
This initiative is part of a larger Rs 1,900 crore investment to create world-class sports infrastructure in Meghalaya. Beyond the 2027 Games, this investment is designed to leave a lasting legacy for future athletes in the state.
The Chief Minister urged associations to use the funds judiciously, ensuring Meghalaya’s athletes are well-prepared and competitive. The state envisions not just a successful hosting of the games, but also a strong show in the medalytally, cementing Meghalaya’s status as a rising sports powerhouse.
