BSF has described the pace of work in ongoing stretches as “satisfactory,” with hopes to complete them within the next three to four months.

Amid rising national focus on bolstering border security, fencing work along several vulnerable stretches of the Indo-Bangladesh border in Meghalaya has commenced. The Border Security Force (BSF) has described the pace of work in the ongoing stretches as “satisfactory,” with hopes to complete them within the next three to four months.

According to Inspector General O.P. Upadhyay of the BSF Meghalaya Frontier, construction is actively progressing in regions such as Nanjuri, Nayabazar, Lyngkhat, and Tuka in East Khasi Hills; Rongtila in West Jaintia Hills; and Harai and Hugaria in East Jaintia Hills. These areas, he said, are advancing steadily thanks to active monitoring by the Chief Minister of Meghalaya and support from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

IG Upadhyay said, “We are very sincere about the early completion of the fencing. The Chief Minister is actively involved, and we are seeing strong coordination with the MHA.”

However, around 59 kilometers of the international border particularly from Muktapur to Jaliakhola remain unfenced. This is due to logistical constraints, administrative bottlenecks, and local resistance in some pockets.

Despite these challenges, officials are optimistic. “We are confident that the remaining unfenced areas will also see swift progress soon,” IG Upadhyay added.
