The long-awaited report of the Expert Committee on State Reservation has been officially submitted to the Meghalaya Government, marking a significant step in the ongoing discourse over the state’s reservation policy. The document is now under examination, with Chief Secretary, DP Wahlang who has been tasked by the cabinet to study its contents and submit a detailed summary by August 31.

Talking to Northeast Live, Meghalaya Chief Secretary DP Wahlang said that he is now in the process of opening the report and studying it and assured to submit it on time by the 31 of August.

The Expert Committee was constituted to review the existing reservation policy framework in the state, which has drawn considerable attention and debate across political and public spheres. With the report now in the hands of the state’s top bureaucrat, the focus shifts to the cabinet’s decision once the summary is presented.

The Meghalaya government appointed retired Madhya Pradesh High Court Judge, Justice Mool Chand Garg, as the Chairman of the Expert Committee in August 2023 to lead the review process.

The committee held multiple meetings, including physical meetings in Shillong. The committee’s first physical meeting was held on March 8, 2024.

The state’s reservation policy, which allocates 40% of seats each to Khasi and Garo tribals, 15% to other backward tribes, and 5% to the open category, was slated for review following demands from various organizations.

The expert committee’s mandate included studying the current policy, recommending modifications if necessary, and conducting consultations with all stakeholders.
