In a major breakthrough against militant activity along National Highway 37, a joint team of Jiribam District Police and 38 Assam Rifles arrested a wanted NSCN (Niki Sumi) militant after a dramatic river chase at Kamranga, Jiribam district, Manipur on June 19.

Acting on specific intelligence inputs regarding the presence of armed militants involved in kidnapping and extortion, the combined team launched an operation at Kamranga. After thorough surveillance and verification, the team conducted a well-coordinated raid around 4:00 PM near Hill Cross English School.

According to a release issued by police, the security team spotted a man who matched the description given in the tip-off during the raid. Upon seeing the personnel, the suspect attempted to escape towards the Jiri river with the intent to cross into Cachar district, Assam. As he jumped into the river and tried to swim across, some team members pursued him into the water while others quickly boarded a nearby boat. The personnel caught up with the suspect mid-river and successfully apprehended him after a tense chase.

On interrogation, the militant revealed that he is an active member of the NSCN (Niki Sumi) faction and had been stationed at Kamranga to carry out extortion activities targeting the general public on behalf of the outfit. He further confessed to having played a key role in several kidnapping and extortion cases reported along NH-37 in recent months.

The accused has been handed over to Jiribam Police Station for further investigation and necessary legal action.
