Despite Pressure For CBI Probe, Police Given Free Hand to probe the Raja Raghuvanshi murder case: CS DP Wahlang

He said, "The police have always had a free hand to conduct the investigation, and there was no attempt from any quarter to interfere with the process."

Amid ongoing investigations into the high-profile murder of Indore tourist Raja Raghuvanshi in Meghalaya, State Chief Secretary D.P. Wahlang has stated that the state police were given a completely free hand to probe the case, despite mounting pressure for a CBI investigation.

Speaking exclusively to Northeast Live, Wahlang said that there had been significant demands, particularly from the victim’s and accused’s families, to hand over the case to central agencies. However, the state government chose to back its police force fully, a decision he said paid off with the arrest of the key accused.

“The police have always had a free hand to conduct the investigation, and there was no attempt from any quarter to interfere with the process. That is the reason why the investigation led to the arrest of the culprits,” Wahlang stated.

Calling the case “challenging,” Wahlang said that the investigation team worked under immense pressure and time constraints, yet managed to crack the case.

“There was a lot of pressure from various quarters to hand over the investigation to central agencies. The Meghalaya Police worked under a lot of pressure, and the government must give credit to the investigation team. They have managed to crack it,” he said.

Regarding the comparison between the state police and central agencies, the Chief Secretary urged against drawing such comparisons.

“It is futile to go in that direction and speculate whether the state police are better than the CBI. Let us not go into conjecture. What matters is that the culprits have been nabbed and the investigation is progressing,” Wahlang said.

He reiterated that while families from both sides did urge for a CBI inquiry, the government stood firm.

“Yes, there was pressure from Raja and Sonam’s families to hand over the case to central agencies, but we did not succumb. We gave the police a free hand, and they did a good job,” he added.

The murder case of Raja Raghuvanshi is being investigated by the Meghalaya Police. All the accused-Vishal Chauhan, Akash Rajput, Anand Kurme and Raja’s wife Sonam Raghuvanshi and her alleged lover Raj Kushwaha are currently in the custody of Meghalaya Police. Earlier Meghalaya Police has secured 8 day remand of them. After continuously interrogating the accused, police yesterday recreated the crime scene.

East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem said, “Raja was taken completely by surprise when they attacked him. Sonam was standing in front of Raja. Vishal was standing to his right, Akash was behind him slightly to the left, and Anand was standing to his left. There were three blows, the first by Vishal, the second by Anand and the last blow by Akash. When the first hit was given blood came out and Raja fell down, Sonam ran off the spot because Raja was screaming. Later the body was thrown by the 3.”

He said, “At the parking lot where they had kept their two-wheelers, Sonam had given the 3 accused the signal that they should finish the job today.”

The SP said that this whole thing was played out and the police have got a very clear picture now.

Today is the last day of the 8-day remand of the accused. They will be produced before the court tomorrow in Shillong and police will seek additional custody of them.
