Air India Bids Final Goodbye to Imphal Airport After Decades of Service

First Published: 16th June, 2025 11:35 IST

The airport authority clarified that this change is part of a pre-planned, long-term strategic shift by the airline.

Air India has officially wound down its operations at Imphal International Airport from June 15, bringing to an end a historic chapter in Manipur’s aviation journey. The decision marks the conclusion of decades of service by the national carrier that once symbolised pride, connection, and reliability for people of Manipur.

In a statement issued by Imphal Airport, authorities said, “After decades of distinguished service, Air India is concluding its operations at Imphal International Airport, bringing to a close a significant chapter in the aviation history of Manipur, today the 15th June, 2025.”

Moving forward, the Tata Group will continue flight operations at the airport through Air India Express, Air India’s low-cost carrier and a wholly owned subsidiary of Air India.

For generations of travellers, Air India meant more than just an airline. It served as a lifeline between Manipur and the rest of the country. The airline’s signature red-and-white livery, polite cabin crew, and dependable service created an identity that resonated with passengers across the region.

As the curtains fall on its operations at Imphal, Air India leaves behind a lasting legacy of connectivity and trust. The airline played a key role in linking Manipur to major cities, helping to boost economic activity, education, tourism, and medical travel over the years.

The airport authority clarified that this change is part of a pre-planned, long-term strategic shift by the airline. “It is important to clarify that this transition is part of a long-standing, pre-planned strategic decision by the airline, and is in no way related to any recent incident,” the statement added.

As Air India exits, it leaves behind heartfelt memories and a legacy that will live on in the skies over Manipur. The people of the state say goodbye with deep gratitude.
