Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, has announced that Rs 951.27 crore has been sanctioned for the construction of the Tura Bypass in West Garo Hills, Meghalaya.

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, has announced that Rs 951.27 crore has been sanctioned for the construction of the Tura Bypass in West Garo Hills, Meghalaya.

The 29.03 km bypass will decongest the district headquarters of Tura and enhance connectivity in the urban areas.

The 29.03-kilometer bypass will connect National Highway 127B to National Highway 217, and will be built to a 2-lane configuration with paved shoulders. Starting near Sanchonggre village on NH-127B and ending at Jenggitchakgre village on NH-217, the bypass is designed to circumvent the densely developed and heavily congested urban core of Tura town, where narrow roads and high traffic volumes currently hinder mobility.

NH-217 serves as a vital link between Guwahati and Dalu, a key inland customs check-post at the India-Bangladesh border. The new bypass is expected to streamline traffic flow, segregating local traffic from through traffic, thereby reducing congestion in Tura town and improving road safety.

“This infrastructure project will not only decongest Tura but also enhance connectivity to the international border, fostering economic growth and safer travel,” Gadkari stated in his X post.
