Sonam Raghuvanshi will be lodged in an isolated cell near the jail warden’s office and will be under continuous CCTV surveillance.
Sonam Raghuvanshi, arrested for the brutal murder of her husband, Raja Raghuvanshi, will be lodged at the Shillong District Jail once her involvement in the murder is proved, and if court grants a life term to her. Her entry will take the total number of female inmates in the prison to 20 out of a total of 496 prisoners. Sonam will be only the second woman in the facility charged with murder. Currently, Sonam is being interrogated by the SIT and she continues to be at the Sadar Police Station in Shillong.
Given the high-profile nature of the case and nationwide public scrutiny, jail authorities are taking extraordinary precautions. Sonam will be lodged in an isolated cell near the jail warden’s office and will be under continuous CCTV surveillance. Two senior female inmates have been designated as her cell companions and custodians. Their role will be to assist jail staff in monitoring her behaviour, ensuring her mental well-being, and preventing any self-harm, reports said.
Standard prison protocols will apply to Sonam, including scheduled meals breakfast, lunch, and dinner and access to television. She will also be allowed family visits, provided the names of visitors are submitted in advance and cleared by jail officials. Like all other female inmates, she will be expected to participate in vocational activities such as sewing and basic prison upkeep.
If found guilty, Sonam is likely to face life imprisonment in the same facility.
It needs to be mentioned that, the case has captivated the nation due to its disturbing elements and plots leading to Raja’s murder. According to East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem, Sonam and her alleged lover, Raj Kushwaha, made multiple attempts to kill Raja in Guwahati, Nongriat, and Mawlakhiat before finally succeeding in Sohra. Raja was hit from behind while momentarily stepping away during their honeymoon trip.
Investigators revealed chilling details of the couple’s alternative murder plots. One plan involved killing an unidentified woman, burning her on a two-wheeler, and faking Sonam’s death. Another involved staging a drowning. Fortunately, none of these plans came to fruition.
After committing the murder, Sonam fled Meghalaya disguised in a burqa, travelling across multiple states using public transport. She managed to evade authorities for over a week before being apprehended in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, at approximately 1 AM on June 10.
Raja’s decomposed body was discovered on June 2, nearly ten days after the couple went missing on May 23 during their honeymoon. With Sonam now in custody and awaiting transfer, the spotlight shifts to the legal proceedings that will determine the outcome of one of India’s most sensational murder cases in recent memory.
