6 Dead As Dibrugarh and Tezpur Sizzled at Over 38 Degrees, Guwahati Burnt at 37.2 Degrees

The meteorological department has predicted hot and humid conditions over the Northeastern states for the next 2 days.

At least six people are reported to have died due to severe heat conditions across Assam. Two people are said to have died in Guwahati due to heat stroke as temperatures in the city soared to 37.2 degrees on Friday but felt like close to 50 degrees. The temperature was 4.7 degree Celsius above normal.

But sudden showers in the afternoon brought some respite to the people of the city.

Dibrugarh recorded a maximum of 38.5 degree Celsius which was 7 degrees above normal temperature. Tezpur sizzled at 38.6 degree Celsius, which too was 7 degrees above normal. Silchar recorded a maximum of 36.8 degree Celsius which was 4.8 degrees more than the normal temperature. North Lakhimpur recorded a maximum of 38.5 degree Celsius which was a departure of 6.7 degree from normal temperature.

The other states of Northeast too have been witnessing intense heat conditions over the past couple of days. Shillong, the capital city of Meghalaya known for its cool climate, recorded a maximum of 28.1 degree Celsius on Friday which was a departure of 4.4 degree Celsius from normal temperature.

Pasighat in Arunachal Pradesh recorded a maximum of 38.8 degree Celsius which was 7.8 degree departure from normal temperature. Aizawl, capital city of Mizoram, recorded a maximum of 31.6 degree Celsius which was 5 degree Celsius above normal temperature. Kohima, the capital of Nagaland, recorded a maximum of 31 degree Celsius which was 5.1 degree Celsius above normal temperature. Imphal, capital of Manipur, recorded a maximum of 34.2 degree Celsius which was 4.7 degree more than the normal temperature and Agartala, the capital of Tripura, recorded a maximum of 35.6 degree Celsius which was 3.3 degree Celsius higher than normal temperature.

Significantly, the Labour Welfare department of Assam on Friday rescheduled the working hours for the tea garden workers from the existing 8 am to 4 pm to 6 am to 2 pm.In view of the extreme heat and reported heatstroke cases, the tea garden management and the tea garden laborers in majority of the plantation had mutually rescheduled the working hours a few days back to address the health concerns due to the rising temperatures.

Earlier on June 10, Assam Education Minister, Ranoj Pegu permitted District Commissioners (DCs) across the state to reschedule school timings based on local weather conditions. Pegu urged all DCs to remain alert and make necessary adjustments to ensure the safety and well-being of students. This move, taken as a precautionary measure, allows district authorities the flexibility to decide what is best for their respective areas.This year, summer arrived early, with temperatures in May already reaching levels usually seen during July and August.
