According to her family, she went missing soon after reaching the city.

The Uttarakhand government has ordered a detailed investigation into the death of Rosmita Hojai, a young woman from Assam’s Dima Hasao district, whose body was found in the Ganga River after she went missing in Rishikesh on June 6.

The probe was initiated after Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote to Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, urging him to look into the matter seriously and ensure a fair investigation into the circumstances that led to Rosmita’s death.

In response, Chief Minister Dhami took to social media platform X and assured full cooperation. He stated, “We share your concern Hon’ble CM Shri @himantabiswa Ji. We are fully committed to ensuring a fair, transparent, and timely investigation. I have directed the state’s DGP to conduct a thorough and detailed investigation of the entire incident.”

Rosmita had reportedly travelled to Delhi to appear for a recruitment examination and later accompanied two individuals, including her boyfriend Hemant Sharma, to Rishikesh. According to her family, she went missing soon after reaching the city. After five days of search, authorities recovered her body from the Ganga River under mysterious circumstances.

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, while sharing his concern, mentioned in his letter that the events surrounding Rosmita’s disappearance and eventual death raised serious suspicions of foul play.

Rosmita’s mother had filed a zero FIR at Haflong Police Station in Assam, which was later transferred to the concerned police station in Uttarakhand. The FIR alleges that Rosmita was most likely brutally assaulted by her boyfriend Hemant Sharma during their stay in Rishikesh.

The Uttarakhand Police, under the direction of the DGP, has now taken over the investigation and is expected to look into all possible angles, including criminal assault and homicide.

Both the Assam and Uttarakhand governments have vowed to ensure justice is delivered, and that those responsible for Rosmita’s tragic death are held accountable.
