Tragic: 25-Year-Old Commits Suicide Over Online Gaming Debts in Sikkim

Michael Limboo was addicted to online games to such an extent that he took loans to play

Unable to bear the burden of loans taken to play online games, 25-year-old Sikkim man Michael Limboo, died by suicide at Tikjuk Veer in Gyalshing district, Sikkim on the morning of June 10.

Michael was addicted to playing online games. He was so addicted, that he, after exhausting his salaries on playing the online games, started taking loans from his friends. But unable to repay the money, penniless Michael, under immense stress, decided to take his own life.

Michael, originally a resident of Chingthang, was found hanging by a nylon rope. His cousin, Salim Limboo, found the body at around 6:45 AM and immediately reported the matter to the authorities.

During the investigation, Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Gyalshing and the police recovered a suicide note from Michael’s jeans pocket. In the note, Michael admitted to misusing his monthly salary on online gaming platforms and borrowing money from friends, which he was unable to repay. He expressed deep regret and revealed that the financial burden pushed him to take the extreme step.

After completing all necessary legal formalities, authorities sent the body to the District Hospital in Gyalshing for post-mortem examination. They later handed over the body to Michael’s legal guardian.

It may be mentioned that, over the past few months, Sikkim has been reporting a growing number of suicide cases. According to NCRB report, 247 cases were recorded in 2024. As of May 2025, the state has already reported at least 44 suicides.
