Meghalaya Police Cracks Raja Raghuvanshi Murder Mystery: Raj Kushwaha Was the Mastermind, Sonam His Partner

Raj Kushwaha had planned Raja’s murder 11 days prior to Raja’s wedding with Sonam

Within two days of arresting Sonam Raghuvanshi, Raj Kushwaha and three other accused, Meghalaya Police has cracked the Raja Raghuvanshi murder mystery that kept almost the entire nation on tenterhooks since May 23 when Raja and Sonam, on their honeymoon in Meghalaya, was reported to be missing. The interest in the case further deepened when Raja’s decomposed body was found on June 2 in Sohra, Meghalaya, but wife Sonam was missing till she suddenly surfaced in Ghazipur, UP on June 10 at 1 AM.

After taking Sonam, her lover Raj and three other accused – Akash Rajput, Vishal Chauhan and Anand Kurme into police custody yesterday late evening in Shillong, East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem informed a house packed with media people that Raj Kushwaha was the mastermind behind the murder and Sonam acted as his loyal partner helping him and the others execute the gruesome murder.

After the first day of interrogation today, SP Vivek Syiem said, “Raj Kushwaha is the mastermind behind Raja’s murder. Other accused are his friends. Sonam is the partner of Raj.”

The Murder was Pre-Planned

Sharing details about how the murder was plotted, SP Syiem said that Raj and Sonam tried to kill Raja thrice before getting lucky the fourth time. “They had been trying to get rid of Raja at various places. They first wanted to eliminate him somewhere in Guwahati, in Nongriat, Meghalaya but they did not find a place to dispose of the body, then they tried in Mawlakhiat. They tried to kill Raja when he went to attend nature’s call and finally, they did it in Sohra,” said SP Syiem.

Did Sonam Promise Rs 20 Lakhs to Contract Killers for Killing Raja?

There had been speculation that Sonam promised Rs 20 lakh to the contract killers.

However, SP Syiem clarified that “Not much money was actually given. Rs 50,000 was handed over to the other 3 accused for expenses during their stay here. Whether there was a larger financial consideration is still under investigation.”

SP Syiem further stated that Raj comes from a poor financial background, and investigators are yet to establish whether there was a property dispute or inheritance motive involved, however, at this juncture, it appears to be a clear case of a love angle.

While Raja Was Planning His Wedding, Raj and Sonam Were Planning His Murder

SP Syiem said that the chilling plot to kill Raja was hatched 11 days before his wedding. Raj not only orchestrated the murder but also devised a post-crime plan for Sonam to fake her own abduction and reappear as a victim in Siliguri.

“The plan was to have Sonam surface in Siliguri and act like she was kidnapped,” said SP Syiem. However, the plan fell apart after one of the accused, Akash, was arrested. A panic-stricken Raj then instructed Sonam to surface wherever she was and stick to the same victim narrative. Sonam was in Ghazipur when she contacted her family, allegedly following Raj’s instructions. She was told to say she had been abducted and to pretend to be innocent.

How Did Sonam Land in Ghazipur UP?

“On June 8, Sonam was supposed to go to Siliguri in a vehicle arranged by Raj, but when Akash was arrested in Uttar Pradesh, Raj got to know and he panicked and just told Sonam to surface wherever she was,” said SP Vivek Syiem.

When Will Police Recreate Crime Scene?

The SP said that the police is currently investigating and interrogating the accused, once they gather proper facts of the matter and get a clear picture, they will gather evidence and then recreate the crime scene.

When asked what the conspirators’ endgame was, SP Syiem said, “Probably they were hoping that the body would decompose, given how far and remote the location was and nobody would find it. She must have thought the investigation would take 3–4 months. By then, the body would not be identifiable, and a missing person case would be filed. Sonam planned to say she was abducted by certain people and would resurface somewhere in Siliguri, West Bengal, after that, she would simply play the victim.”

Lastly, the SP said, “We have got 8 days of police remand, and if required, we will seek more. We are mandated to file a chargesheet within 90 days, but I am sure we will be able to file it much before that.”
