Meghalaya Tourism Minister announced that dept would collaborate with Sohra administration to install CCTV cameras in key tourist hotspots
In a solemn yet dignified ceremony, the Meghalaya Govt today honoured the brave individuals and groups who played a crucial role in the search and rescue efforts for the late Raja Raghuvanshi, whose tragic death in Sohra shocked the entire region.
Held at the Conference Hall of the SDO (Civil), Sohra, the event was attended by Meghalaya Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh. The minister lauded the tireless efforts of all involved in tracing Raja Raghuvanshi’s whereabouts following his mysterious disappearance during a honeymoon trip with his wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi now under police custody as the alleged mastermind behind the chilling crime.
Addressing the gathering, Lyngdoh appealed to tourists visiting Meghalaya to arrive with a “clean heart and mind,” stressing that any unlawful or harmful behaviour would be dealt with firmly. He urged both locals and tourists to uphold self-discipline and promote responsible tourism.
In a major development, the Tourism Minister announced that the department would collaborate with the Sohra administration to install CCTV cameras in key tourist hotspots to improve surveillance and public safety.
Additionally, he promised a sanctioned facility for street vendors near Mawkdok Bridge, aiming to balance public convenience with support for local livelihoods.
As a token of appreciation, the government distributed a total of Rs 5.4 lakh among 36 members of the Tour Guide Association of Meghalaya including its Central Body, Sohra Unit, local guides, and the West Jaintia Hills Adventure Sports & Mountaineering Association offering Rs 15,000 to each member. Certificates of appreciation were also handed to government personnel from the police, SDRF, Fire & Emergency Services, and administrative departments for their exemplary service.
Meanwhile, the Meghalaya Police secured an 8-day remand of the five accused in Raja’s murder, including his wife Sonam Raghuvanshi. The accused Sonam (25), Akash Rajput (19), Vishal Singh Chauhan (22), Anand Kurmi (23), and Raj Kushwaha (21) were produced before the District and Sessions Court in Shillong yesterday.
The case, which began as a honeymoon trip on May 21, turned tragic when the couple went missing the next day. Raja’s decomposed body was found on June 2 near Weisawdong Falls. Following a multi-state investigation, Sonam surrendered on June 9 in Uttar Pradesh, unraveling a deeper conspiracy behind the heinous crime.
