Home Minister Shah has appealed to the people of Manipur to maintain peace
Free movement within Manipur, issues related to the internally displaced people (IDPs) and the recent shutdown called by Arambai Tengoll were among the key issues discussed during the two meetings held back-to-back with Union Home Minister Amit Shah on June 9 and 10 and former Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh and Rajya Sabha MP L Sanajaoba.
Speaking to the media at Imphal airport today after returning from New Delhi, Former Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh said, “We went to Delhi on the Union Home Minister’s invitation to discuss the situation in Manipur. We had two rounds of discussions, and he listened to us seriously. We raised all the pressing issues, including the free movement policy, opening of highways for all communities, concerns of internally displaced persons (IDPs), and the recent developments that led to shutdowns across the state.”
According to Biren Singh, Union Home Minister Shah is holding dialogues with different communities in a bid to restore peace and normalcy. “Our situation is complex and sensitive, as it involves community-based issues. So, when we speak, we must ensure that no one is hurt,” he said.
Shah has appealed to the people of Manipur to maintain peace and assured that the Centre is committed to preserving the integrity and unity of the state. “Certain steps will be taken on the ground to bring peace and a long-term solution, but those cannot be revealed yet,” Biren said.
He further stated that efforts are underway to engage with civil society organisations (CSOs), elected representatives, community leaders, elderly mothers, and youth to collectively work towards a peaceful resolution.
Reiterating his appeal to the people, Biren said, “Everyone must work together to protect the state without resorting to violence.”
The former Chief Minister also shared that the people’s desire to see a popular government in the state was communicated to Amit Shah. “We told him that the people want an elected government in place. The Home Minister agreed and said it will be done, depending on the evolving situation.”
On the issue of illegal immigration from Myanmar and Bangladesh, Biren said he requested the Union Minister to extend the 30-day deadline for identification and verification of immigrants, considering the longstanding and sensitive nature of the issue. “The Home Minister assured us that he will look into the request,” he added.
