Mizoram: The Mz-SWIC serves as a centralised data repository integrating water-related information from 82 different data across the state.

Aiming to revolutionise water resource management in the state, Mizoram has launched the Mizoram Water Resources Information System (Mz-WRIS), a comprehensive digital platform under the newly established Mizoram State Water Informatics Centre (Mz-SWIC).

The Mz-SWIC serves as a centralised data repository integrating water-related information from 82 different data across the state. Its objective is to streamline the collection, management and dissemination of water data for better governance, disaster preparedness and scientific research.

At the core of this initiative is the Real-Time Data Acquisition System (RTDAS), set up under the National Hydrology Project. RTDAS will capture crucial hydrological and meteorological parameters including river water volume, rainfall data, groundwater levels, water vapour levels, maximum and minimum temperatures, atmospheric pressure, wind speed and direction, solar radiation, relative humidity, soil moisture and evaporation rates.

To facilitate this, the state has established a robust network of monitoring instruments, including:10 Automatic Weather Stations (AWS),27 Automatic Rain Gauges (ARG),22 Automatic Water Level Recorders (AWLR) and 20 Digital Water Level Recorders (DWLR).
Additionally, two AWS units have been set up under the Brahmaputra Board, contributing data to the state’s Hydro-Meteorological Data Centre, which is managed by Mz-SWIC.

Mz-WRIS will integrate modern technologies like Remote Sensing and GIS to build an interactive and transparent water information system. The collected data will also be shared with the National Water Informatics Centre, enhancing coordination at the national level.

A Decision Support System (DSS) is also being developed under Mz-WRIS to support policy makers in effective water resource planning and allocation across sectors such as domestic use, agriculture and industry.
The initiative is designed not only to ensure transparency in water governance but also to support disaster management efforts. Real-time rainfall and river data will aid in flood forecasting and early warning systems, providing critical information to local communities.

Furthermore, Mz-WRIS is expected to enhance smart irrigation practices, support climate-resilient agriculture and facilitate academic and field research. A dedicated Data Dissemination Policy is also being drafted to regulate and guide access to the information.

With active involvement from various water-related departments, Mz-SWIC is set to become a pivotal institution in Mizoram’s water management ecosystem—ushering in an era of data-driven decision-making and sustainable resource use.
