Bandh Continues Across Manipur Valley as Protests Over Arambai Tenggol Leader’s Arrest Intensify

On Sunday, security forces transported Kanan Singh to Guwahati from Imphal.
Bandh continued to paralyse normal life across Manipur’s valley districts as protests escalated over the arrest of five senior Arambai Tenggol members, including key leader Kanan Singh. A joint team of the Manipur Police and the CBI arrested them on Saturday, triggering massive public outrage.
On Sunday, security forces transported Kanan Singh to Guwahati from Imphal. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) confirmed his arrest at Imphal Airport, citing his alleged involvement in multiple criminal acts linked to the 2023 Manipur violence.
In response, protestors called a 10-day statewide shutdown that entered the second day today, exempting only emergency services like medical and media. The bandh has crippled transport, businesses, and daily activities across the valley.
Protests have intensified in districts such as Imphal, Thoubal, Kakching, Bishnupur, and even Jiribam. Violent clashes broke out between protesters and security forces. Demonstrators pelted stones while police responded with tear gas, smoke bombs, and in some cases, live rounds. Several protesters suffered serious injuries during the confrontations.
Tensions remained high in the Imphal valley since Saturday night. District Magistrates have imposed Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) to maintain law and order. Authorities have also shut down mobile internet services in five valley districts to prevent further unrest.
Despite appeals from leaders across political parties, who also met Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, public anger shows no sign of easing.
Taking to X, Manipur Police appealed: “Manipur Police appeals to the public and peace-loving citizens not to support the protests related to the arrest of individuals involved in unlawful and criminal activities. We are committed to maintaining peace and normalcy in the state.”
