The Air Evacuation Operation from Chaten in North Sikkim concluded on Saturday.
A total of 76 army personnel were airlifted by three MI-17 helicopters. The Army personnel were airlifted from Chaten in North Sikkim to Pakyong Greenfield Airport. This marks the completion of the coordinated evacuation efforts from Chaten, which included the successful rescue of all stranded tourists including foreign nationals earlier.
Meanwhile, Sikkim Government continues to closely monitor the overall situation and remains committed to providing all necessary support and assistance to those affected.
On Friday, IAF engaged four Mi-17 and two Cheetah helicopters for rescue and relief operations. On the day, there were significant breakthroughs as the helicopters were able to reach isolated and severely affected areas of Chaten which was earlier not possible due to bad weather.
The helicopters which got airborne at dawn on Friday evacuated more than hundred stranded people, including children, within a short period, in the tiny weather window available. The helicopters delivered the much needed succour to civilians, service personnel and foreigners who have been stranded in this landslide hit region.
On the same day, 199 people were rescued and 6000 KG of relief material was transported in 22 sorties.
A devastating landslide struck an Indian Army Military Camp on June 1 in which three people lost their lives. Six more Army personnel including a Lt.Col and his Retired Sqadron Leader wife and daughter are still missing.
