Tripura Raj Bhavan Goes Green, Installs Rooftop Solar Panel

The panel was funded by an Odisha-based renewable energy development company and implemented by the TREDA

A day after World Environment Day, Tripura took a notable step toward promoting sustainable energy practices, as Governor Indra Sena Reddy Nallu on Friday inaugurated a 40-kilowatt peak (kwp) grid connected rooftop solar panel at the Raj Bhavan in Agartala, making it one among the constitutional building in the state to run entirely on green energy.

The solar rooftop panel, which cost Rs 30 lakh, was funded by a renewable energy development company based in Odisha and implemented by the Tripura Renewable Energy Development Agency (TREDA).

The initiative is expected to significantly reduce the carbon footprint of the Governor’s official residence, serving as a model for government institutions and private establishments alike to shift from conventional electricity to clean and sustainable green energy sources.

Speaking at the inauguration, Governor Nallu highlighted the progressive drop in solar energy costs due to government initiatives over the past few years.

He encouraged citizens and institutions to take advantage of central schemes like the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, under which rooftop solar installations are subsidized, helping households lower their electricity bills while contributing to environmental protection.

“Solar power is not just a sustainable alternative; it’s also an economically viable one. People can cut down their power bills and reduce dependence on the grid. Moreover, in remote or off-grid areas where traditional electricity has yet to reach, solar energy offers a practical and powerful solution,” the Governor stated.

He further pointed out that self-help groups (SHGs) can collaborate to establish community-level solar installations and solar-powered irrigation systems, especially beneficial for agricultural activities in rural regions.

The Government of India has been aggressively promoting solar energy through multiple schemes, including subsidies for households, net-metering policies for surplus power sellback, and financial incentives for institutions switching to solar energy.

With the commissioning of the solar plant at Raj Bhavan, Tripura joins the growing list of Indian states actively aligning with the national vision of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070 and the target of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based energy capacity by 2030.
