Cong MLAs have threatened agitation if the eviction drive is not stopped

Is Assam Congress trying to shield Bangladeshi infiltrators who have illegally settled in the state? Well, appears so because amid the Assam Police’s eviction drive against illegal infiltrators, a team of Congress legislators submitted a memorandum to Assam Chief Secretary Ravi Kota on Thursday raising objection against the drive and urging Assam government to give them a chance to prove their “genuine citizenship”. They have also threatened agitation if the drive is not stopped.

Talking to media after meeting the Chief Secretary Congress MLA from Rupohihaat constituency, Nurul Huda said “The harassment of genuine citizens in the name of drive against illegal infiltrators should end. Maximum numbers of declared foreigners got ex-parte orders. Government has served notices to the people who are daily wage earners, who should be given a chance to prove their genuine citizenship. In this regard we met Assam Chief Secretary Ravi Kota and submitted a memorandum.”

Congress legislator from the Sarukhetri constituency, Zakir Hussain Sikdar has threatened agitation against the drive. “We have failed to understand that which are the invisible forces in the Union Home Ministry and State Home department that are trying to harass the genuine Indian sources in the name of D Voters and have been apprehended and sent to detention camps. We advocate for a foreigner free Assam, but harassment of genuine Indian citizens is unacceptable.

This act is condemnable, undemocratic and deprivation of basic human rights. We will go for massive agitation if this drive continues.”
Significantly, at a time when the drive to deport over 400 illegal foreigners has found support from various organisations, this stand of the Congress party seems to reflect the party’s soft corner towards illegal Bangladeshi settlers in Assam.

The Union Ministry of Home Affairs on May 19 imposed a 30-day deadline for states and Union Territories (UT) to authenticate the identities of individuals suspected to be unlawful immigrants from Bangladesh and Myanmar asserting to be Indian citizens. Following this one-month timeframe, all those Bangladeshis and Rohingyas who cannot furnish authentic papers will be subject to deportation.
