Any Further Progress in Meghalaya-Assam Border Issue Likely Post Assam Polls: Meghalaya Minister

First Published: 30th May, 2025 19:29 IST

In March this year, Assam CM Sarma had said that Assam is eager to resolve issues in the six pending disputed areas.

Amid heightened public anticipation over the long-standing Assam-Meghalaya border dispute, Meghalaya Cabinet Minister Paul Lyngdoh clarified that while the state is ready in all aspects to move forward with negotiations, any substantial breakthrough remains unlikely in the immediate future most probably due to the election climate in Assam.

Lyngdoh said “The committee report is ready, but as you will recall, all that was pending was the field tour, the visit to the affected site and one such site was Lagpih. But, the response from the Assam counterpart is still awaited, probably because of the fact that they had the Panchayat elections and the now the upcoming assembly elections. And with elections, at the doorsteps, it’s very likely that they do not want to risk any major decision that might tilt the electorate against the current dispensation. Nothing largescale, nothing spectacular will happen before the end of the electioneering process.”

In March this year, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had said that Assam is eager to resolve issues in the six pending disputed areas. “We are working on and will continue to work on the issue and I am sure that the balance will be restored mutually,” CM said at an event in Shillong.
