Post-Pahalgam Attack, Tourists Flock to Meghalaya in Search of Safe, Scenic Getaways: MRTF President Allan West Kharkongor

Meghalaya: According to the Meghalaya Rural Tourism Forum (MRTF), this shift in travel sentiment has sparked a tourism boom across the state.
Meghalaya has rapidly emerged as a prime tourist hub in the wake of the tragic terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. As safety becomes a top priority for travellers, many are now looking to the North East—particularly Meghalaya—for its scenic beauty, cultural richness, and relative security.
According to the Meghalaya Rural Tourism Forum (MRTF), this shift in travel sentiment has sparked a tourism boom across the state. Hotels, homestays, and resorts are operating at full capacity, making this one of the busiest tourist seasons in recent memory. Industry experts attribute this surge not only to concerns over safety elsewhere but also to positive publicity, notably from cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar’s recent vacation in Meghalaya.
MRTF President Allan West Kharkongor stated that the combination of heightened safety awareness and high-profile visits has significantly boosted Meghalaya’s appeal.
“With tourists prioritizing destinations that offer both safety and natural beauty, Meghalaya has quickly become the first choice for many,” he said.
Last year, the state welcomed over 16 lakh visitors. This year, projections suggest an increase of one to two lakh more, solidifying Meghalaya’s position as the gateway to the North East.
Kharkongor emphasized the need for enhanced infrastructure, robust safety measures, and sustainable tourism practices. In light of growing concerns over unregulated trekking and hiking, MRTF has proposed mandatory local guides for tourists venturing into remote or hilly areas. This, they believe, is key to ensuring safety while also empowering rural communities.
However, this positive trend comes amidst troubling incidents, particularly the death of a Hungarian tourist who had gone missing some weeks ago and, the recent incident of a newlywed couple from Indore who went missing near Sohra and is yet to be traced even after 8 days.
