Masked Attacker Nabbed in Assam Days After Viral Video of Schoolgirl Assault in Shillong

In a high-priority operation that spanned two states, Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills Police apprehended 24-year-old Himan Gogoi of Jorhat, Assam, just three days after launching an investigation into the disturbing sexual assault of a schoolgirl in Shillong that was captured on video and widely circulated on social media.
The video, which surfaced on May 24, showed a masked man sexually assaulting a schoolgirl by lifting her school skirt and taking photos using a mobile phone. The footage sparked public outrage and prompted immediate police action. A special investigation team was constituted on May 26, led by the Additional Superintendent of Police (Operations), East Khasi Hills, with a mandate to identify and arrest the culprit at the earliest.
The investigation swiftly led to the identification of the location of the assault, Umsohsun, along the lane leading to the YWCA. It was established that the incident occurred around 6:35 AM on May 23. The victim was identified and examined, and an FIR was lodged under Lumdiengjri Police Station under the relevant sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and POCSO Act.
