Sikkim 50th Statehood Day: Modi particularly hailed footballer Bhaichung Bhutia, Olympian Tarundeep Rai, and Jaslal Pradhan.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a stirring address on Sikkim’s 50th Statehood Day, paid glowing tribute to the northeastern state’s sporting heroes and described Sikkim as a rising force in India’s sporting future.

Speaking about the state’s remarkable achievements, PM Modi said, “India will soon become a sports superpower. Sikkim and the North East youth will play a huge role in fulfilling this dream.”

PM Modi particularly hailed legendary footballer Bhaichung Bhutia, celebrated Olympian Tarundeep Rai, and accomplished sportsperson Jaslal Pradhan, for bringing immense pride to the state and the nation.

“Sikkim gave us football legends like Bhaichung Bhutia, Olympians like Tarundeep Rai, and players like Jaslal Pradhan, who made the country proud. Our goal is for a champion to emerge from every village and town in Sikkim,” he said.

The Prime Minister also announced that a new sports complex in Gangtok will soon serve as a “birthplace of champions” and reiterated Sikkim’s special priority under the Khelo India initiative. “I have full faith that the energy and passion of Sikkim’s youth will make India reach the Olympic podium,” he added.

Celebrating Icons of Indian Sport

Bhaichung Bhutia is India’s most celebrated footballer and a trailblazer from Sikkim. Born in Tinkitam, Bhutia’s contribution to Indian football is legendary. He captained the national team, represented top clubs like East Bengal and Mohun Bagan, and played overseas with Bury FC in England. Known as the “Sikkimese Sniper” for his striking prowess, he has been instrumental in popularising football across India.

Tarundeep Rai, another pride of Sikkim, is a renowned Indian archer and Olympian. He has represented India in multiple Olympics and has been a consistent performer in international tournaments, including the Asian Games and World Championships. His dedication to the sport has made him a role model for youth in the Northeast and beyond.

Jaslal Pradhan, a name less mainstream but equally revered in regional circles, has made significant contributions to sports, particularly in promoting local talent. Known for his versatility and leadership, Pradhan has been influential in developing grassroots sports initiatives across Sikkim.

A Model of Development and Heritage

Beyond sports, PM Modi highlighted Sikkim’s broader developmental journey, stating that the state has emerged as a model of progress and a
symbol of cultural richness. “Sikkim is one of the Indian states with the highest per capita income, which is a testament to the capability and determination of its people,” he noted.

To further boost the state’s infrastructure, PM Modi virtually inaugurated several key projects, including:

  • A 500-bedded District Hospital in Namchi worth over Rs 750 crore
  • A Passenger Ropeway at Sangachoeling, Pelling in Gyalshing District
  • A statue of Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee at Atal Amrit Udyan in Sangkhola, Gangtok
  • Swarna Jayanti Maitreya Manjari Project at Ridge Park
  • Gaushala in Mamring, Pakyong

These initiatives are expected to enhance healthcare, tourism, and civic pride in the region.

PM Modi’s address captured a vision of Sikkim as both a sports incubator and a beacon of development. “Sikkim’s youth have the passion and the potential,” he said. “From football fields to Olympic arenas, they are ready to make India proud.”

As the nation celebrates Sikkim’s 50 years of statehood, it is clear that the state’s influence is growing far beyond its geographical borders — through its athletes, its progress, and its enduring spirit.
