Flood Crisis in Byrnihat’s Umpher: MLA Sohtun to Seek CM Sangma’s Intervention for Assam-Meghalaya Drainage Coordination

Flood Crisis in Byrnihat’s Umpher: MLA highlighted that Umpher village gets flooded because of inadequate drainage on the Assam side.
Concerned about the recurring floods devastating Umpher village in Byrnihat, Jirang MLA Sosthenes Sohtun has said that he will personally speak to Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and request him to initiate a dialogue with the Assam government for a solution.
The MLA highlighted that Umpher village gets flooded because of inadequate drainage on the Assam side of the border, impacting residents on both sides. He stressed the need for a coordinated drainage expansion plan involving both states.
“To address the issue of cleaning the stream within Assam’s jurisdiction, I will speak with Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and request his intervention,” Sohtun said.
Meghalaya and Assam will have to work together. “This collaboration is essential to finding a permanent solution to the recurring flash floods,” the MLA said.
The proposed dialogue between the two governments is expected to pave the way for joint infrastructural improvements and long-term relief for flood-prone areas like Umpher, ensuring that residents and educational institutions are no longer disrupted by seasonal disasters.
The frequent flooding has severely affected several households and the St. Jude Secondary School.
MLA Sosthenes Sohtun, along with the Deputy Commissioner of Ri Bhoi, Abhilash Baranwal, and officials from NHAI and PWD, conducted an inspection of the flood-affected areas today.
During the inspection, they were accompanied by teachers from St. Jude Secondary School and local village leaders, who showed them the persistent hardships caused by the floods in the area. They earnestly appealed to the visiting officials to take immediate steps to widen the drainage systems in the locality to prevent further flooding.
MLA Sohtun and DC Baranwal assured the public that swift action would be taken to address the issue. They emphasized that work would commence soon to mitigate the impact of heavy rainfall, ensuring that residents of Umpher no longer suffer flood-related damages to their homes and properties.
They also committed to finding a permanent solution to the flooding problem, which has become a regular challenge during the monsoon season.
