Mizoram: Ban on Bangladeshis and Myanmar Nationals Buying Land in Lawngtlai

The Lai Autonomous District Council (LADC) has issued a strict order banning all nationals from Bangladesh and Myanmar from engaging in any land transactions in Lawngtlai district of Mizoram. This move comes amid a growing influx of displaced individuals crossing into the region from the two neighbouring countries.
The order stated that both undocumented migrants and refugees had begun acquiring land in the district for farming and construction, which violates Indian law.
“It is illegal for any foreigner, whether a refugee or undocumented migrant, to own or acquire land in India by any means,” said in the notification issued on Tuesday. “From now on, buying or selling land by foreign nationals in Lawngtlai district is strictly prohibited.”
The decision follows a directive from the Ministry of Home Affairs highlighting the continued arrival of migrants and refugees from Myanmar and Bangladesh into Mizoram’s southernmost district. Authorities have already set up around 50 relief camps to shelter the incoming population.
The order instructed all local revenue officers to strictly implement the new rule and also warned that failure to comply would lead to administrative consequences.
At the same time, despite the official suspension of border trade with Myanmar on May 16 due to regional tensions and shortages of essentials, informal trade continues. Reports indicate that cross-border exchanges quietly resumed on May 20 via routes linking Hruitezawl village with Paletwa township in Myanmar’s southern Chin State. Another active trade route passes through Lungpuk village in neighbouring Siaha district.
Essential goods such as fuel, cooking oil, bread, chillies, galvanised iron sheets, solar panels, batteries, and furniture continue to flow across the border. These supplies remain critical for communities in southern Chin and Rakhine states, which have been cut off due to the ongoing conflict between the Myanmar military and the Arakan Army since 2023.
