Tipra Motha Lodges Complaint Against Gomati DM After He Refused to Meet Pradyot Debbarma

First Published: 27th May, 2025 21:17 IST

Tripura Chief Secretary J.K. Sinha has assured appropriate action against the DM.

In a significant political development, a delegation of Tipra Motha MLAs and Executive Members (EMs) led by Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) Chief Executive Member Purna Chandra Jamatia and Minister of State (MoS) Brishyaketu Debbarma met Tripura Chief Secretary J.K. Sinha on Tuesday, lodging a formal complaint against Gomati District Magistrate (DM) Tarit Kanti Chakma.

The delegation expressed deep resentment over an incident that took place on May 25 evening, where the DM allegedly disrespected their party supremo and royal scion Pradyot Kishore Debbarma by refusing to meet him.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, MoS Brishyaketu Debbarma stated, “In the memorandum submitted to the Chief Secretary, we have demanded a detailed investigation and strict administrative action against the DM for his misconduct.”

He further added, “The Chief Secretary assured us that appropriate action will be taken. He also mentioned that the Chief Minister has already instructed him on the matter, and he has personally spoken with Pradyot Kishore Debbarma regarding the incident.”

Meanwhile, TTAADC CEM Purna Chandra Jamatia expressed strong disapproval, saying, “It is absolutely unacceptable that Maharaja Pradyot Kishore was subjected to such humiliation. The DM’s refusal to meet him has drawn condemnation from both the public and other representatives. I was also present with him during the incident, and we strongly urged the Chief Secretary to take serious action against the DM.”

The controversy began when Pradyot Kishore Debbarma, who also serves as Chairman of the TTAADC’s Advisor and Administration Reforms Committee, alleged that the young IAS officer, Tarit Kanti Chakma had been repeatedly ignoring his requests for a meeting over public concerns. Despite multiple attempts through calls and messages, Debbarma claimed he was blocked and denied access.

On Sunday evening, Debbarma personally visited the DM’s official residence in Gomati district. However, security personnel and an attendant reportedly refused to let him in or even pass on his message, leaving him waiting outside the gate.

The incident has sparked political backlash, with Tipra Motha as well as other Opposition parties including the CPIM and Congress accusing the DM of gross misconduct and disrespect towards a leader of constitutional and administrative significance.

The Chief Secretary has assured the delegation that the matter will be examined, and appropriate steps will be taken as per procedure.
