Lalduhoma also discussed handing over Legpui Airport to AAI and expanding air connectivity in the state
Mizoram is all set to get a second airport and the hill state of northeast is poised to see major improvements in air connectivity and air infrastructure.
Chief Minister Lalduhoma on Monday met Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu in New Delhi and had deliberations about a greenfield airport in South Mizoram and heliport development under Prime Minister’s Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik or UDAN scheme, and the handing over of Lengpui Airport to Airports Authority of India.
CM Lalduhoma holding talks with Civil Aviation Minister Naidu on the issue holds significance as the Mizoram Government’s decision to hand the Legpui Airport to Airports Authority of India has seen opposition by pressure groups.
Mizoram’s current airport, the Lengpui Airport, has handled 4.25 lakh passengers in 2022-2023. The traffic at the Airport is estimated to exceed 5 lakh.
Presently, Legpui is connected with direct flights from Guwahati, Kolkata, Delhi, Imphal and flights from Bangaluru with stopovers at Kolkata and Guwahati.
Additionally, the Legpui airport is connected with all the district headquarters of Mizoram by helicopter services. A helicopter service was also introduced between Churachandpur in Manipur and Legpui after violence broke out in the state of Manipur.
Significantly, on Monday, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also met Union Civil Aviation Minister Naidu in Delhi and discussed expanding air connectivity and infrastructure in the northeastern state. The Union Minister assured Chief Minister Sarma that work for Silchar’s greenfield airport will begin this year and the crucial Rupsi airport will also be expanded.
According to CM Sarma, the Union Minister also informed that Jorhat, Dibrugarh and Silchar airports will soon be connected to more Indian cities through new flight connections.
The meeting of two Chief Ministers from two Northeastern states with the Civil Aviation Minister on the same day holds significance and gives a clear indication of expanding air connectivity and infrastructure in the region.
