Rupam Asom Arrested: Rupam Asom has played a key role in ULFA-I’s activities in eastern Assam, especially Tinsukia district.

In a major success for counter-insurgency efforts in the Northeast, Tinsukia police have arrested United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) commander Rupam Asom near the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border.

The arrest followed a targeted operation based on intelligence inputs, with security forces combing dense jungle terrain where Rupam and his associates were reportedly hiding. The operation also led to the recovery of arms, ammunition, and incriminating materials.

Rupam Asom has played a key role in ULFA-I’s activities in eastern Assam, especially Tinsukia district. As per reports, he is believed to be behind a wide extortion racket in the Bordumsa region, targeting businesses and tea estate officials.

Notably, he is the main accused in the 2018 killing of Bhaskar Kalita, officer-in-charge of Bordumsa police station. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) had previously charge-sheeted him and six others for the crime.

His arrest marks a significant blow to ULFA-I’s operations in the region.
