Meghalaya Turns Power-Surplus, Sells Electricity on National Market Amid Umiam Water Worries

Mondal confirmed that this move is part of the state’s long-term plan to improve both its energy stability and financial health.
In a major turnaround from its earlier power-deficient status, Meghalaya has started generating surplus electricity and is now selling the excess power on the Indian Energy Exchange (IEX). Power Minister A.T. Mondal confirmed that this move is part of the state’s long-term plan to improve both its energy stability and financial health.
Minister A.T. Mondal clarified that the current drop in water levels at the Umiam reservoir is not due to any structural issue. Instead, the government deliberately held back water in preparation for the dry season. He assured the public that the recent rainfall has helped manage the situation, and overflow control is currently in progress.
“We are not wasting any resources,” Mondal said. “It is better to use our water to generate power and earn revenue, rather than letting it go unused.”
He said that the sale of surplus electricity is a carefully planned and fully transparent process. All transactions go through the IEX, ensuring complete accountability. The revenue earned from these sales is being used to strengthen the Meghalaya Power Distribution Corporation Limited (MePDCL). This will help the state purchase power during periods of high demand in the future.
Minister A.T. Mondal also added that Meghalaya’s energy needs are currently stable. “We are in a good position. We can meet our own power demands and still contribute to the national power pool,” he said.
