State of Neglect? Sikkim Reports Suspected Suicides of 4 Elderly Persons in a Day

First Published: 22nd May, 2025 13:59 IST

All four victims, aged between 51 and 75 years, were alone at the time of their deaths.

As Sikkim proudly celebrates the 50th anniversary of its Statehood, a disturbing trend threatens to overshadow the joy. On May 21 alone, four elderly individuals were found dead in separate suspected suicide cases across the state, highlighting a deepening mental health crisis.

Police sources confirmed that three of the victims died after falling from heights, while the fourth was found lying lifeless under suspicious circumstances. All four victims, aged between 51 and 75 years, were alone at the time of their deaths.

Authorities have registered separate cases for each incident and launched investigations. Although the deaths occurred in different locations, the similar circumstances point to an alarming pattern, loneliness and isolation among the elderly.

Over the past few months, Sikkim has been reporting a growing number of suicide cases. According to NCRB report,  247 cases were recorded in 2024. As of April 2025, the state has already reported at least 42 suicides.

While the state continues with colourful parades, music events, and speeches to mark its 50 years of statehood, these tragic deaths are a stark reminder that true progress must include emotional and mental well-being.

As the state celebrates its milestones, it must not forget those who are quietly suffering. The government and civil society must step up efforts to raise awareness about mental health, expand access to counseling services, and build stronger community support.
