Govt’s Silence on Bangladesh’s Embankment Along Tripura Border Alarming: CPIM Leader Jitendra Chaudhury

First Published: 21st May, 2025 20:48 IST

Earlier, the YTF had staged a protest against the construction of the embankment, demanding immediate government intervention.

Leader of Opposition and CPIM state secretary Jitendra Chaudhury on Wednesday visited the Ballamukh area under Belonia subdivision in South Tripura district to inspect the controversial high-rise embankment recently constructed by Bangladesh near the international border.

Chaudhury accused the Indian and state government of failing to raise strong objections with the neighbouring country, despite the clear violation of international border norms.

Accompanied by local CPIM MLA Dipankar Sen and other party leaders, Chaudhury held discussions with Border Security Force (BSF) officials and affected villagers.

The team found that large swathes of agricultural land were already inundated due to waterlogging caused by the embankment, obstructing the natural flow of water following the pre-monsoon rains.

Speaking to reporters, Chaudhury said, “Bangladesh has constructed the embankment within 150 yards of the zero line, which is a direct violation of established international protocols. In the past, even minor deviations in India’s border fencing have led to strong objections and even gunfire from the other side, but this massive structure has gone uncontested.”

He also criticized the perceived indifference of both the state and central governments, stating, “This might be an international matter, but the state government should have flagged it to the national authorities. The silence is alarming and detrimental to the interests of our farmers.”

Local villagers echoed similar concerns, fearing that with the arrival of the monsoon, waterlogging will worsen, posing a serious threat to their livelihoods and farmlands.

Earlier, the Youth Tipra Federation (YTF) had staged a protest against the construction of the embankment, demanding immediate government intervention. Tripura’s PWD Secretary Kiran Gitte had also visited the affected region recently to assess the ground situation.
