Tripura is all set to have its first five-star luxury Taj Palace Hotel in Agartala. The Government of Tripura yesterday signed a lease agreement with The Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL) that operates and manages the Taj Group of Hotels to transform the historic Pushpabanta Palace in Agartala into a Taj property.

This initiative marks a historic first in India, as it is the country’s first heritage hotel to be developed through an agreement between a state government and IHCL.

Chief Minister Manik Saha, speaking at the ceremonial signing, described the development as “a matter of great pride” and “a historic achievement.” He stated, “Tripura has finally overcome all hurdles, and we can now proudly say that we too shall have a beautiful five-star heritage hotel.”

Highlighting how this property will boost the state’s tourism potential, Saha said, “Chartered flights will bring international tourists who won’t just stay in this iconic hotel but also explore Tripura’s unique destinations and learn about the glorious history of the state’s Maharajas.”

The Taj Pushpabanta Palace Hotel, spanning 7.78 acres will include 100 rooms with an average size of 40 square metres. Facilities will feature a wellness area, swimming pool, banquet hall, fitness centre, children’s club, and signature suites reflecting the royal heritage of Tripura. IHCL has committed to restoring the palace with great care, ensuring public access and hospitality excellence.

A 600-square-metre convention hall will be redeveloped with modern amenities, including breakout rooms, banquet kitchens, and pre-function spaces.

IHCL’s Taj Pushpabanta proposal of October 7, 2024 got the Tripura Cabinet’s approval on March 10, 2025. A Memorandum of Understanding was subsequently signed on March 14, 2025.

The project is expected to create around 200 direct employment opportunities, primarily benefiting Tripura’s youth and enhancing local skill development.

The lease signing ceremony witnessed the exchange of documents between IHCL Area Director and GM Jayanta Das and Tripura Tourism Secretary UK Chakma. Present at the event were Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, Industries and Commerce Secretary Kiran Gitte, and senior officials from the Chief Minister’s office.

Tourism Minister Chowdhury praised the Chief Minister’s persistent efforts, saying the project’s success was only possible due to Saha’s unwavering resolve despite numerous challenges.

The luxury heritage hotel is set to redefine hospitality in the Northeast, placing Tripura firmly on India’s high-end tourism map.
