Assam Government will pump in Rs 209 crore to upgrade Khanikar Stadium
After being named the second capital of Assam, Dibrugarh, the British-era hub of tea, oil, and coal trade is now set to get the state’s largest stadium besides getting an Assembly campus.
Briefing the media in Dergaon after a Cabinet meeting held today, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “Cabinet has approved Rs 209 crore to upgrade the Khanikar Stadium of Dibrugarh. From 5000 sitting capacity, the Stadium will now have 35,000 sitting capacity, this is 10,000 more than the Sarusajai Stadium in Guwahati. Khanikar Stadium will become the largest stadium of Assam”.
CM Sarma also informed that the Cabinet today cleared Rs 284 crore for the new Assembly campus in Dibrugarh. The complex will house the main Assembly building, hostels for MLAs, and a 1,000-seat auditorium.
The Assam Cabinet at its meeting on January 26, 2025 had announced that Dibrugarh will have an Assembly campus complete with MLAs hostel, Assembly building and an auditorium.
In a tweet on March 23, 2025, CM Sarma wrote, “…Dibrugarh, an important trading centre throughout history, was once the pillar of industrialisation in India. It was one of the earliest cities to get a train connection and its bustling port made it a major hub of tea, timber, oil and coal trade. Unfortunately, over decades the city lost its glory. That stops NOW. Our government is working on a comprehensive plan – involving all stakeholders – to reclaim Dibrugarh’s glorious past and rebuild this beautiful city as a major economic and cultural hub of Eastern India.”
