Assam: Sumi Borah Gets Bail in Multi-Crore Trading Scam Case

First Published: 21st May, 2025 12:24 IST

Her release comes after spending 8 months in judicial custody, following her arrest on September 12

In a major development in Assam’s high-profile online trading scam, actress and social media influencer Sumi Borah has been granted bail by the Gauhati Hight Court today in the final case lodged against her at Borborua Police Station, Dibrugarh.

With this, Borah is now out on bail in all 3 cases filed against her in connection to the multi-crore investment fraud.

Earlier, Sumi Borah had secured bail in 2 other cases registered at the Dibrugarh and Duliajan Police Stations.

Her release comes after spending 8 months in judicial custody, following her arrest on September 12, 2024, alongside her husband Tarkik Bora, after the couple surrendered to the police.

The scam, pegged at over Rs 2,200 crore, came to light after the arrest of alleged mastermind Bishal Phukan on September 2, 2024.

Investigations soon revealed his close links with Sumi Borah and Tarkik Bora, prompting the police to file suo moto cases and expand the probe.

The case being investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), has seen over 40 FIRs filed across Assam, implicating multiple individuals linked to a fraudulent online trading scheme that duped thousands of investors across the state.

Bishal Phukan and Tarkik Bora were also granted bail by the Barborua Police Station on May 1, 2025, after spending over 6 months in custody.

The CBI continues to investigate the broader network involved in the scam, which has shaken public trust in unregulated online trading platforms and raised questions about regulatory oversight in digital investment schemes.
