MLA Wakes Up to a Flooded Room. Is Tripura’s Rs 52 Cr MLA Hostel Already Falling Apart?
First Published: 20th May, 2025 18:56 IST
The legislator, who resides in the facility alongside most fellow MLAs, described the experience as both inconvenient and alarming.
Was it built to last or just to impress? That’s the question that many are asking now. Built at a cost of Rs 52.15 crore, just two years back, the MLA hostel at Tripura’s Agartala is leaking.
BJP MLA Pramod Reang woke up to a flooded suite barely two years after the MLA hostel’s grand inauguration.
Is this a one-off mishap, or does it signal deeper structural flaws in a project meant to house the state’s elected representatives?
Raising serious concerns over the quality of construction, Shantibazar MLA Pramod Reang today reported severe water leak from the terrace of the newly built hostel, leading to flooding in his room.
The legislator, who resides in the facility alongside most fellow MLAs, described the experience as both inconvenient and alarming.
Reang accused the construction agency of using substandard materials and warned that the situation could worsen with the onset of the monsoon.
MLA Reang said, “All of us MLAs moved into the hostel in 2023. If this is the condition within just two years, one can only imagine how it will deteriorate in the future when new legislators move in.”
He called for a thorough government inquiry into the construction process and urged action against those found responsible.
The incident has sparked concern over accountability in state infrastructure projects, especially when public funds and legislative dignity are involved.
The MLA hostel was virtually inaugurated by President Droupadi Murmu during her Tripura visit in October 2022 and formally allotted in May 2023 in the presence of Chief Minister Manik Saha and Speaker Biswabandhu Sen.
The facility spans over 3,983 square meters and includes 45 suites, a library, a gym, and multiple meeting halls. The construction was overseen by the state Public Works Department (PWD).
