This visit came just a day after the first meeting of the Coordination and Land Search Committee for the formation of the Mizo Territorial Army, held on May.
Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma today inspected a potential site for the proposed Territorial Army Battalion Headquarters at Lungleng Village. This visit came just a day after the first meeting of the Coordination and Land Search Committee for the formation of the Mizo Territorial Army, held on May 13.
The newly formed committee, chaired by Lt. Col. Clement Lalhmingthanga, MLA, includes the Secretary of the Home Department as the Member Secretary, along with representatives from the General Administration, Land Revenue & Settlement, Planning & Programme Implementation, Finance, Public Works Department, and the Director of Sainik Welfare & Resettlement.
In its inaugural meeting, the committee decided to temporarily station two companies of the Territorial Army in Aizawl and Lunglei.
During the site visit, the Chief Minister was joined by Health Minister Lalrinpuii and MLA Baryl Vanneihsangi. They also held discussions with village leaders.
The Chief Minister’s push for a Territorial Army in Mizoram traces back to April 8, when he urged the Union Home Ministry to support the formation of a Mizo Territorial Army to combat drug trafficking along the India-Myanmar border. During a meeting in Aizawl with a Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) team led by Director General Anurag Garg, Lalduhoma emphasized the need for more manpower and better policing infrastructure.
“I have requested the Ministry of Home Affairs to assist us in raising a Mizo Territorial Army, which will help us tackle the narcotics challenge,” Lalduhoma said at the time.
Additionally, Mizoram’s Lok Sabha MP Richard Vanlalhmangaiha has also called for the establishment of a Territorial Army unit in the state. He raised this demand during a meeting with Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth in New Delhi in April.
