Officials will also assess the feasibility of using bioremediation techniques to remove contaminants and restore the river's natural ecosystem.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has initiated a comprehensive action plan to revive and clean the Wahumkhrah River, stating community involvement as a critical component of the effort. Sangma held a meeting with officials and civil society representatives on Thursday to discuss strategies for restoring the polluted river, which has long suffered from improper garbage disposal and unchecked littering.

Taking to X, CM Sangma wrote, “Strategic zones will be identified, and enhanced surveillance will be set up in vulnerable areas where littering and improper garbage disposal remain major challenges.” Officials will also assess the feasibility of using bioremediation techniques to remove contaminants and restore the river’s natural ecosystem.

However, the Chief Minister said that physical cleaning alone will not be enough to achieve lasting change. He stressed the importance of close collaboration with Dorbar Shnong (traditional village councils) and local residents to tackle the root causes of pollution. Sangma said that active and sustained community participation will be essential for the long-term success of the river revival project.
