Manipur’s Braveheart Deepak Chingakham Returns Home in Coffin: Family, Officials Pay Tearful Tribute

A pall of gloom descended at the airport as Deepak’s family members broke down seeing their beloved son’s coffin.

Wrapped in the tricolour, the mortal remains of BSF Jawan Deepak Chingakham returned home to Manipur this afternoon, but in the most heart-wrenching way inside a coffin.

The 25-year-old braveheart, who was martyred in cross-border firing by Pakistan arrived at the Bir Tikendrajit International Airport, Imphal at 1:30 PM, leaving his family, friends, and fellow citizens engulfed in grief.

Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, locals, MLAs, political leaders gathered to pay their last respects.

The silent salute, the moist eyes, and the folded hands said it all.
After the solemn tribute at the airport, Deepak’s body will be taken to his native village Yairipok Yambem Mathak Leikai in Imphal East district, where his last rites will be performed with honours.

The BSF has offered a government job to Deepak’s younger brother, standing by them in this hour of loss.

Earlier, honouring the supreme sacrifice of Constable Deepak Chimngakham, Governor Ajay Bhalla has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh for his next of kin.

Deepak was critically injured in the cross-border firing by Pakistan on May 10 in the RS Pura sector of Jammu. He succumbed to his injuries on May 11 while undergoing treatment.
