The operation began after a desperate social media appeal from Ksh Jabaskumar, a student at SKUAST, Sopore, Baramulla, who sought urgent assistance for evacuation
Displaying the spirit of Nation First and brotherhood of the armed forces, Meitei, Kuki and Naga officers of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) came together to evacuate 39 students including six from Manipur stranded in the conflict-hit Kashmir Valley. This operation, led by Commandant Ningthoujam Ranbir Singh of the 84th Battalion, demonstrated the power of cooperation, even as their home state remains deeply divided by ethnic violence.
The evacuation mission showed the collective efforts of officers from different communities, including Deputy Commandant Moirangmayun Indrakumar Singh from Samurou, Commandant Shimreishang Kengoo from Ukhrul, and Assistant Commandant S. Gin Khan Mung from Churachandpur. Despite the ongoing conflict in Manipur that has separated the Meitei and Kuki communities for over two years, these officers put aside their differences to ensure the safe passage of their fellow Manipuris from the volatile region of Jammu and Kashmir.
The operation began after a desperate social media appeal from Ksh Jabaskumar, a student at Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST), Sopore, Baramulla, who sought urgent assistance for evacuation. Commandant N. Ranbir Singh swiftly responded, coordinating closely with the university administration to arrange the safe evacuation of 39 distressed students, including six from Manipur. The group also included 9 students from Bihar, one each from Jharkhand, Jammu, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi , 4 each from West Bengal, Assam, Tripura, 3 from Nagaland and 6 students from Odisha.
On the evening of May 10, the students were evacuated from Pampore and brought to the Tactical Headquarters of the 84th Battalion CRPF in Ramban, where they were provided free accommodation, food, and essential logistics. The following morning, after breakfast, the students were transported to Jammu Railway Station for their onward journey to their respective states.
The students expressed heartfelt gratitude to Commandant N. Ranbir Singh and the personnel of the 84th Battalion for their compassion and support during this critical time. This humanitarian gesture not only ensured their safety but also reinforced the trust and bond between the CRPF and the citizens it serves, despite the ongoing ethnic divide back home.
It is worth noting that violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities in Manipur has persisted since May 3, 2023, displacing over 60,000 people and claiming more than 250 lives. This long-standing conflict has prevented both communities from returning to their respective villages.
