The Social Welfare Department has intensified its fight against the drug menace, with a focus on early intervention.
Meghalaya’s drug addiction rate has declined by 20%, reflecting the impact of sustained efforts by the state government to combat substance abuse. Social Welfare Minister Paul Lyngdoh announced this after chairing a review meeting of the DREAM Mission, a state initiative focused on reducing drug dependency through early prevention, rehabilitation, and stricter enforcement.
The Social Welfare Department has intensified its fight against the drug menace, with a focus on early intervention. It has partnered with the SAN-KER Centre for Neurology and Mental Health to introduce a specialised training program for school teachers. Under this initiative, educators will be trained to counsel students from Classes 2 to 5, teaching them about the dangers of substance abuse. The course, priced at Rs. 10,000, will be partially subsidised, with the government covering 50% of the cost. These trained teachers will serve as in-house counsellors, offering critical support to students in schools across the state.
Youth engagement is another key aspect of the state’s anti-drug strategy. Shillong Lajong FC has joined hands with the government to spread awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and reduce the stigma around recovery. Faith-based organisations are also being roped in to extend this message to a broader audience.
In a significant step to strengthen enforcement, the state is also training sniffer dogs to boost its drug detection capabilities. These canine units are expected to be operational within the next six months, enhancing the state’s ability to crack down on narcotics trafficking.
