Congress Stages Protest in Agartala, Demands CM Manik Saha’s Resignation Over Healthcare Crisis

Roy also accused the Health Department of making false claims about development while ground realities remain grim.

The Tripura unit of the Opposition Congress party staged a protest rally in Agartala on Saturday, raising serious concerns over the alleged collapse of healthcare services at GBP Hospital and Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC), the state’s main referral hospital.

The Sadar District Congress led the rally, which slammed the deteriorating condition of public health facilities under Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, who also holds the Health portfolio.

The protest began at the Circuit House area and marched towards the Directorate of Health at Gurkhabosti, with protesters chanting slogans against the state government. However, a large deployment of state and central paramilitary forces blocked the rally near Aranya Bhavan, stopping it from advancing further.

Senior Congress leader Tanmoy Roy addressed the media and strongly criticized the Chief Minister for failing to bring any visible improvement in the healthcare sector, despite being a doctor himself.

“The people of Tripura had high hopes when Dr. Manik Saha became Health Minister. But today, those hopes have completely shattered,” Roy said.

He alleged that both indoor and outdoor services at GBP Hospital remain in a terrible state. According to Roy, hundreds of poor patients wait for hours without treatment, and many are forced to lie in the hospital corridors due to lack of space and proper care.

Roy also accused the Health Department of making false claims about development while ground realities remain grim.

“Even district hospitals across the state are facing a severe shortage of doctors, nurses, and basic facilities. Patients are being denied the most essential healthcare services,” he added.

Roy announced that the Congress party would submit a memorandum to the Director of Health and continue its agitation until the government improves healthcare services.

The protestors also demanded Chief Minister Manik Saha’s resignation from the Health portfolio, holding him responsible for the worsening condition of the public health sector.

It is worth mentioning that just over a week ago, a Minister from the BJP-led state government and an MLA from alliance partner TIPRA Motha visited GBP Hospital and AGMC. After their visit, they publicly expressed serious concerns about the poor state of services at the facility. Following their remarks, the Health Department ordered an official inquiry into the matter.
